Great Danes tour South Africa

Seven great Danes tour South Africa. Actually it was more like seventeen Danes (from Denmark) that were on tour, however I only met seven of them. Finn and his intrepid entourage shipped their bikes across the ocean to our shores and arrived by plane to collect their bikes from PSI Freight in New Germany, Natal and start their epic journey.

Ten riders left the PSI Freight offices (New Germany, Natal) for St Lucia while the other seven went in the opposite direction to Underberg, to ride the Sani Pass. But that wasn’t to be… with all the rain we’ve had recently and the fact that four of the six bikes were road-bikes, they only made it half way up and then turned around the headed back to their overnight base, the Sani Hotel in Underberg.

Next day the happy seven Danes rode up to Clarens and stayed at the Maluti Mountain Lodge.

Finn Ingemann, the tour organiser, had been in South Africa once before, so he knew the roads a bit. Friendly Finn is also the Importer of Ducati motorcycles in Denmark. Finn and his gorgeous lady Anja Buchmann were riding a Ducati MTS 1100 Multistrada, the other five in the group were blue-eyed Mikael Peytz on a Ducati 800 Monster, Mikael’s short and sharp wife Anne Thea on a 620 Monster, cheerful Erik Knudsen on his BMW R80GS accompanied sexy blonde Viking Vita Olsen on a 695 Ducati Monster and sun-burnt Max Nidson on his 650 Cagiva Elefant.

I met up with the group at Gold Reef City, where they had all been underground while visiting the theme park, and escorted them to Borisimo’s Guest House in Alberton. The next morning after breakfast I again escorted them, via the N17 and Snake Road, onto the N12 and on their way to Bellfast, Dullstroom and Lydenburg.

Their group was then going to ride to Nelspruit, where they would visit the Kruger National Park for three days, then to Kamatiepoort, meet up with the remaining ten Danes and ride to  Maputo, where they will party and fish and chill for a few days. Then they ride back to New Germany, crate their bikes for shipping back to Denmark and then hop on a plane  back home.

And then... just to put a damper on things, one of the Danes (Jens) hit a moreofa big pothole outside Carolina, breaking his Ducati Multistrada's front rim and buckling his rear rim as well, making the bike unfixable. I got the call for help late on Friday, collected the bike on a farm outside Carolina on Saturday and trailered it back down to PSI Freight in New Germany (Pinetown) for shipping back to Denmark with the rest of the bonnies on Monday morning.
