17th Annual Redline Run
Our 2011 annual Redline Run turned out to be a very good Run indeed. We meet at the Blockhouse just south of Joburg on the R59, with Jason and Teresa coming from as far as Standerton and brothers Flip and Rudie riding from Witbank, while the rest of us rode from the Vaal triangle.

We rode in perfect, cool weather to Fouriesburg via Heilbron, Petrus Steyn, Reitz and Bethlehem, with only a few Stop ‘n Go’s before Petrus Steyn. Which is a good thing, cos eventually this section will be a great new road like the piece between Petrus Steyn and Reitz. We’d just booked when the rain came down for about three hours and then cleared to a gorgeous, fresh, starlit Free State night.

Saturday morning we assembled in front of the Inn to draw our first cards of our 2011 Redline Poker Run. The ride took us to Clarens, Golden Gate, through the Highlands National Park to Harrismith and the Little Church in Van Reenen. Then we headed back past Harrismith and Bethlehem to Clarens, where we stopped for lunch, draw cards and rode back to the Fouriesburg Country Inn.

Robbie Kartus won the Poker Run and the kitty of R480, with a Top Straight of a Ten, Jack, Queen, King and an Ace. Well done Robbie. Plenty of guys had good hands and it was a nail-biting last draw.

Participants on the 17th Redline Run 2011 were (in no particular order) Dennis Schultz on his Yamaha R1, Flip Opperman on his Suzuki GSX-R1000, Rudie Opperman on a loan BMW 1200GS (his S1000RR was in for its first service), Jason and Teresa Meyer on their BMW 1300GT, Robbie and his newly wedded wife Carol Kartus on their newly acquired Kawasaki ZX-14, Dewald and Warnia Day on their BMW 1200GT, Jan and Marty Boshoff on their old Suzuki 1400 Intruder, Janek and son Victor Majewski on Janek’s Suzuki Hayabusa, Lohan and Lizelle Potgieter on their BMW 1200S, Eddie and Elsabe Kymdell on their BMW 1200S, Corne and Lizelle Stoltz also on a BMW 1200S, Carel and Sanette Nel on their BMW 1200S and me (Kenn Slater) on a BMW 1200GT - making a total of twenty two people on thirteen bikes – a single Yamaha, one Kawasaki, three Suzukis and eight BMs (a GS, three GTs and four 1200Ss).

My trip to Fouriesburg was 310kms, the Poker Run 389kms and my return trip home via Warden was 352kms, bringing up a total of 1051kms for my Redline Run. I used 58.93 litres of fuel, costing R549.14. Obviously Dewald’s (from Sasolburg) trip counter had less kilos on it, while Flip and Rudie’s (from Witbank) had more.
Another great Redline weekend! Thanks to everyone for behaving (as usual) and making it such a wonderful weekend (as always).
