JOBURG to DURBAN RUN 2009
it was cold in Van Reenen's Pass, but not for me on the big, protective Victory Vision Tour
There were seventeen of us on our 15th annual Joburg to Durban Run, namely; Michel and Svetlana Alcaraz on their Honda ST1300 Pan European, Jason and Teresa Meyer on their Suzuki GSX-R750, Dieter Laumann and Karen Grobler on Dieter's BMW R1200RT, Robbie Kartus and Caroline Wooll on Rob's Suzuki GSX-R1000, Dewald and Warnia Day on their BMW K1200GT, Lohan Potgieter on his BMW K1200S, Basil Carolis also on a BMW K1200S, Corne Stoltz on his Suzuki GSX-R1000, Robin Dawson on his Honda CBR1100XX Blackbird, Andre Arndt on a Suzuki GSX-R1000, Dennis Schultz on his Yamaha YZF-R1 and me on the gorgeous, big, 1800cc, V-Twin, Victory Vision Tour from Victory Motorcycles East.
second cards were drawn in the Durban Yacht Basin
The 15th Joburg to Durban Run started on Friday the 24th July. Dennis arrived at my cabin at seven and we left straight-away, riding through Henley-on-klip, past Midvaal Raceway onto the R54, the Victory's outside-temp read a chilly -2, saw Dennis in the rear-view mirrors of the Vision, desperately trying to get cover behind the scant R1's screen, HA!
We met some of the other guys at Vaal Star Stop (Villiers) for breakfast. Departing at 9.30am, we rode on the N3, stopping for petrol at Monte Vista One Stop, through freshly dropped snow in Van Reenens Pass... brrr... it was cold - the temp gauge on the big, luxurious Victory Vision again dropped to minus 2, which didn't really mean much to me, as I was nice and snug, tucked in behind the wind-shield with the grips and seat on full heat, but I felt sorry for the other guys on their superbikes - riding to Estcourt Ultra City, Cato One Stop and on to the La Mercy Beach Hotel. We pulled into La Mercy at 3.30 pm, to welcome drinks sponsored by the Hotel... thanks to Ronnie and his crew.

Gail Fletcher (my skin-'n-blister) met us at Clansthal
After breakfast on Saturday morning, we started out on our JD Poker Run, drawing our first cards at La Mercy (thanks to Warnia for the help with the card-drawing). Second card was drawn at the Durban Yacht Basin. Then we rode all the way along the coast to the Chief's Cabin in Clansthal to draw our third cards, and the fourth at Phat (Pretty Hot And Tasty) Boys in Scottburgh. Then we headed back to Durbs, to Moyo's in uShaka for lunch. At that stage, Michel already had three Queens, and even if anyone had drawn a Joker, could not beat the Frenchman's hand, so I handed him the R340 prize money (well done Michel). After a late lunch we cruised around to a coffee-shop in Umdloti to watch the Springboks trounce the All Blacks 28-19 in Bloemfontein, returning to La Mercy after dark for a lekker braai supper.

Sunday after breakfast we headed for home. In my whole life I have never seen so many speed-trapping cops on the road - almost one behind every bush. But not one of our guys were trapped (I think). Words and Photos by Kenn Slater
